The University of Melbourne is committed to eliminating sexual misconduct and promoting safety for students, staff and visitors. Where sexual misconduct does occur, we aim to provide a supportive and trauma-informed response that prioritises the safety and wellbeing of victim-survivors.
What is sexual misconduct?
The University of Melbourne uses the term sexual misconduct to describe any sexual act or behaviour that a person does not consent to, including sexual assault (and other sexual offences) and sexual harassment.
Sexual misconduct is unacceptable.
If you have experienced sexual misconduct, you have the right to seek support and advice. The University will support you through this process.
What to do if you experience sexual misconduct
If you experience sexual misconduct within the University community, you can:
- Seek advice and support directly from the Safer Community Program
- Connect with University staff via Speak Safely (allowing you the choice to remain anonymous)
- Take action by making a complaint
- Make a report to the Police.

What to do if you see or hear about sexual misconduct
If you experience, see or become aware of sexual misconduct within the University community, you can:
- Make a disclosure (tell someone about what you have seen or heard)
- Intervene, only where reasonable and safe to do so
- Support others
- Get support for yourself.
